The recent developments in collecting techniques for spat of Chlamys operoularis and Chlamys varia make it necessary to find criteria for separating these two species at early life stages. Biométrie criteria for differenciating between species have been found to be usable on individuals of a height superior to 3 mm. A quick différenciation of smaller individuals is possible by observation, under light microscope, of the périostracum external morphology on left valves. |

Introduction : Since 1978, new measures to better manage lobster fisheries were implemented in the Celtic Sea within the context of Community regulations. Meshing, in particular, was set at 60mm, but many owners, in order to maintain sufficient leeway vis-à-vis the regulations and to avoid administrative hassles adopted at the outset fish meshing at 70mm, even 80mm. Certain habits aiming to compensate for the losses due to these increases were established: Adoption of better-performing trawls, increase in the secondary catch and enlargement of the fisheries. At the same time, especially because of strong demand from international bodies, OEM and especially EEC, knowledge about the lobster spread and more reliable assessments were achieved, the main problem... |

Loss of eggs during the incubation period in ovigerous females of Nephrops norvegicus from the Bay of Biscay is calculated using two different methods. The first calculates the egg loss from incubation stage A to stage D. The second calculates the loss between the end of ovary maturation and incubation stage D. The first method may contain a bias which decreases the loss estimation : loss of eggs during trawling may be higher in stage A than in stage D. In the Bay of Biscay, the loss of eggs in ovigerous females of Nephrops norvegicus would be about 45-50% for the entire incubation period. Our result is quite different from the 75% obtained by other workers in Portuguese waters. Loss of eggs during incubation which may be due mainly to predation may be a... |

Since 1978, the habits of the french fishermen working with bottom trawl in the Irish Sea and in the Celtic Sea were altered (CHARUAU et M0RIZUR, 198l) under the pressure of the new mesh regulation. Two facts are pointed out: - the shifting, stabilized during 1980 and 198l, of a part of the effort of the vessels fishing for gadoids, from the area VIIa to the areaVIIf - a tendancy inside the area VIIg of a part of the effort of the Nephrops trawlers to be transferred on benthic fishes when the yield of Nephrops is low. |

Ovary development and the presence of spermatophore in females of Nephrops norvegicus (L.) (Nephropidae) from South Brittany were studied from July 1976 to October 1978 through size classes. Percentage of females bearing spermatophores increased slowly up to 1978 during which year a sudden and important decrease was observed. The percentage decreased to the lowest value obtained in 1976. A study of ovarian development showed that the proportion of small females taking part in reproduction was greater in 1978 than in 1977. The beginning of the decrease in the percentage of spermatophores present coincided with the beginning of spawning in each size class. It may be explained by the behaviour of ovigerous females which stay in burrows during the incubation... |

A pinger experiment was carried out on the French trammel net fishery in the marine protected area off the west coasts of Britanny in order to compare acoustic mitigation measures for harbour porpoise. Three types of pinger devices (Aquamark 100, Pinger V02, DDD02) were used for porpoise mitigation in the area where no bycatch estimation has previously been made. The pingers DDD02 were attached at each end of the net near the anchor. The pinger Aquamark and pinger V02 were attached to the headline of the nets and were spaced by 400 m and 200 m respectively. The EC regulation 812/2004 requires a such pilot study. Observers at sea were deployed on board of 10 fishing vessels from Le Conquet and Audierne harbours. During one year, 462 km of control nets (non... |

Between 2006 and 2008, Ifremer, in collaboration with the polling institute BVA, implemented a pilot survey of french recreational fisheries. The aim of the survey was to assess the overall population involved in this activity, taking into account the diversity of recreational fishing practices, from fish and shellfish gathering on the seashore to angling and spearfishing. The study was designed to provide first estimates of fishing effort, catches and landings, and economic impacts of recreational fishing. The protocol implemented was two-step. First, a telephone survey of french households, based on a sampling frame of the entire french population of people aged 15+, was carried out to assess the population of fishers and give a first general view of the... |

At present, the majority of fisheries are monitored and regulated in areas which are delineated by arbitrary ICES boundaries which do not necessarily have logical or consistent relationships with biological processes or fish movements. The biogeographical identification of Channel stocks is, therefore, an important step towards developing a rational strategy for the management of their fisheries. This synthesis is based on the wide available knowledge which has not been yet entirely exploited with the purpose of stock identification, for 25 commercially important species in the Channel. In addition, principal technics for stock identification are reviewed likewise environmental characteristics of the Channel, which represent fundamental components in... |

Acoustic deterrent devices could be an appealing solution to tackle accidental cetacean by-catches in pelagic trawls or in fishing net gears. The bibliographical data on two species (Harbour porpoise and bottlenosed dolphin) have been analyzed in terms of audiogram, discomfort noise level that could lead to behavioural changes, sensory fatigue, and threshold for permanent hearing injuries. It is possible, on the basis of the above data, to characterize an efficient annoyance sound threshold which is not harmful to the species to be protected. Taking into account the properties of the sound waves propagation in the marine environment and according to the required range, the minimal amplitude of the repulsive sound to emit is proposed. Accordingly, the... |

The European Regulation 812/2004 aims to assess the incidental catches of cetaceans in fisheries and to limit as much as possible the bycatch. The program Obsmer manages for France all the observations at sea required by various fishery regulations. This program is implemented by the ministry of agriculture and fisheries (Direction des Pêches Maritimes et de l’Aquaculture) and IFREMER. For the European Regulation 812/2004, the effort dedicated to observation on board of vessels during the year 2011 represents 287 days of sea area for static gears in ICES area VIII, and also 299 days at sea for towed gears in ICES areas VII & VIII and also in the Mediterranean area. In addition some 308 days at sea were dedicated to set nets in areas concerned with... |

This study provides some background on the set nets and the use of the gears. The various metiers using set nets are presented by region and maritime basin detailing the target species. The physical characteristics of nets (type, mesh), the number of vessels engaged in the activity, fishing areas, the amount of material used and the composition of the catch are inventoried by target species. Intraspecific selectivity for the main target species of set nets is examined in light of the available size composition of catches of turbot, brill, monkfish, pollack, red mullet, bass, common sole, rays, hake, spider crab, lobster. Few differences exist between the nets (single layer) and trammel nets except for the lobster. Minimum mesh sizes are suggested by target... |

Observers were set on board of fishing vessels from North Brittanny ports during one full year (1992-93). This study granted by EC Commission (contract CE/DGXIV-C-1 n° 1992/06) was a first approach for assessing French discards in the western English Channel. It identifies the main species discarded and produces a rough estimate of discard rates and size compositions in each métier targeting fish. The major reasons for variability were explained. Size compositions of catches and discards were provided in order to permit better estimates of the mortality induced by fishing operations. The fixed nets observed were large mesh nets (270 to 360 mm) targeting monkfish and small mesh nets (<200 mm) targeting coastal resources. Netting was found to be more... |
